Here’s a very informative article from http://www.amednews.com/ that reports what’s going on with pharmaceutical sales reps jobs, and what the future looks like:
Doctors increasingly close doors to drug reps, while pharmaceutical cuts ranks
It’s a great article to go to for more detailed information, but the upshot is that doctors are increasingly averse to allowing sales calls from pharma reps, and the industry has slashed sales rep numbers from 102,000 in 2007 to 92,000…and projections are that it will be Seventy five,000 by 2012. (GlaxoSmithKline alone cut 1800 positions in the last year.) Not a worthy job outlook.
My take on it is that if you have a science degree and revenue experience, you should definitely look into another area of medical sales…like clinical sales, clinical diagnostics revenue, pharmaceutical device revenue, hospital equipment sales, imaging revenue, pathology sales, or biotechnology revenue. They are much less tied to the economy, and consistently earn more respect from physicians–who tend to view these kinds of pharma sales reps as experts and consultants, rather than a nuisance.
