Yes, some job skills (like sales skills) are transferable. Yes, I have had client companies hire candidates as pharmaceutical revenue reps, medical sales reps, clinical diagnostics sales reps, hospital equipment sales reps, imaging revenue reps, pharma device sales reps, surgical supply revenue reps, biotechnology revenue reps, or pharmaceutical sales reps without previous lab revenue experience……although it’s not common. The catch is that these candidates always have extensive sales experience or a super difficult area of expertise. The vast majority of candidates I place in pharma sales career opportunities also have science degrees (like molecular, biology, or chemistry).
But it doesn’t matter how transferable your sales skills are or how much of a superstar you were in other companies if my clients want specific, deal-breaking qualifications in their potential employees. Read the job description to save yourself some time and trouble. If it says you’ve to have a Life Science degree or specific pathology sales experience, then your Business Management degree and IT experience won’t get you a call from us. You can still apply – but don’t get your feelings hurt if we don’t call you about this particular career opportunity.
Also, I know that some companies state NO Pharmaceutical Reps on their career opportunities. You can still apply if you wanna (what are they going to do – not hire you, again?), but focus on recruiters or hiring managers who are open-minded to your background.
More importantly, focus on opportunities where you’ve a coach in the system: a recruiter, someone who works there and knows you, or one of your references who’s close to the hiring manager, etc…..
